How do we deal with the homeless? I’m speaking in particular of the homeless who are on street corners asking for money or food. God has given me a particular heart for the homeless. I have so much and they have so little. And yet, in an instant, I could be joining them. Generally speaking, I do not give money. You don’t know what they’ll do with that. And if they’re holding a sign that says “Will work for food”, I’d rather give them food.
The problem is that there are SO MANY. How do you choose who to give to and who not to give to? I can’t give to everyone. My own husband has been out of work for months–going on a year now. I kind of let God tell me….It seems he’ll really tug at my heart for some and not for others. I saw a man standing on a corner several weeks ago and he held a sign that said “Just Hungry”. WOW. That REALLY tugged at my heart. Unfortunately, I wasn’t in a position to stop–I was in the far left lane and couldn’t get over. I even went back but he was gone. However, I saw him again a few weeks later and in the same situation–I couldn’t get to him. So I turned around, he was gone, but I knew he couldn’t have gotten far. So I pulled into the parking lot of the strip mall and found him. I told him how his sign had tugged at my heart and gave him a little money, saying “No one should have to go hungry.”
Interestingly enough, there are several others in the area also begging on the street corner. All of a sudden, they ALL have signs that say “Just Hungry.”
I got to the point once where I would make up a lunch bag full of non perishable food–canned items (pull top only), water, chips, fruit. And I’d hand that out. That’s always taken well–if nothing else, it can be shared. I’ve even put a bag of dog food in occasionally.
I’m wondering if anyone has other ideas of things to do to help them? I even asked one man what he needed. He told me pants. I asked his size, picked them up, and carried them in my car until I saw him again. I put a small bible in the pocket. Hope he reads it!
Please share with me any ideas you may have. I’d love to hear them!
